Buffalo to Albany

Don't know where to start... don't know what you already know.... So camping is allowed on all Canal Corp property unless otherwise signed. That means camping is allowed at all of the locks and everytime we asked about camping at one of the lift bridges out west the operator knew where to send us for camping. All of the amenities that are open to boaters are also open to bikers, just have to ask. All of the lock houses have a shower BUT not all of the keepers are keen on allowing folks to use it. The canal employees are generally very friendly and helpful when asked. Camping is also allowed at Waterford, the very end of the trip at the Hudson river near Albany. They have showers.

I enjoyed the side trip to the Joseph Smith farm site outside of Palmyra. Free tour by an LDS guide. For me it really under scored the "information super hiway" nature of the canal. All sorts of new and different ideas were being shared back and forth.
We enjoyed all of the smaller local canal museums along the way, some better some less better. Really recommend stopping at Fort Stanwix in Utica. Its a National Park, great Ranger led tour. East of Utica to Albany be on the lookout for Stewart's Shops, they are a regional quicky mart with exceptional ice cream.
Be aware that the eastern part of the path from Rome or so east tends to be loud. The canal follows the river as does the NYS Thruway, and a couple of rail lines.
Also, just because, the bike path thru Rochester goes right pass the REI store.
