Hi dear cyclists!
I am living in Thessaloniki, Greece now and am planning to cycle to a seminar that I will attend mid-April in Bansko, in the south of Bulgaria. I was wondering if you have done any of this route (through Serres, to the border, and then to Bansko) and if so, what your experience was. I am an experienced cyclist (originally from the NL) but not so familiar with the region by bike and know that there are quite some mountains to cross.
Also, if anyone is in the same region around that time, send me a message and we can share (a part) of the journey.
Thanks in advance, Eline

Hi Eline,
I cycled twice in the area you plan to go; unfortunately not exactl. But maybe you can use some of my GPS-tracks: https://www.gpsies.com/mapUser.do?username=mia-Tours
I liked much Lake Dojran, the pyramides of Melnik. The mountain pass Popski was a challange but very beautiful region.

Greetings
Michaela
Hi, I rode from Bulgaria to Thessaloniki around Arpil last year and found it a wonderful experince! There are a few hills to go up and over but the beautiful scenery will make it all worth while, and springs and rest stops are very frequent in Bulgaria, particularly in the national parks. I found the main roads where relatively quiet and the minor back roads through the mountains almost deserted. You are sure to have a wonderful adventure in mountains there - have fun!
