Non-Cyclists

Hey fellow cyclists!
I have a question to hosts.
Obviously I'm a cyclist, hence the profile. But I was wondering how hosts feel about hosting someone who is not on a cycling trip.
I am thinking of making a small trip in Wales, either cycling or hiking. I'm not sure yet. (I would not be carrying a tent but a sleeping bag would be doable.)

Would hosts be equally up to host me in either case? Or would these hosts be on couchsurfing anyway?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

You might want to look in the forum archives, as this question has been discussed before. While it is possible that some individual host out there might be willing to host you if you are traveling off the bike, the community consensus is that it would be inappropriate and you should use instead some other hospitality exchange network.

cyclists and noncyclists

There is definitely no consensus on this point. Very strong feelings among many, but very little agreement. The good news is that every host's profile has room to express feelings on this matter, and I hope that more of those opposed to seeing bike-less guests will indicate that preference clearly. I guess I'll edit my own profile to indicate that I enjoy my cycling friends in whatever state they might arrive. My recommendation would be to contact prospective hosts, tell them you're a member of the WSL community, without a bike at the moment, and needing a warm shower. Let them say yes or no. Just by the way, there are quite a few WSL hosts who, themselves, don't bike at all; they just like and respect the bike-touring way of getting around and find bike-touring folks good company.

Thanks for this!

Thanks for this!
I of course was planning to indicate in my messages what my mode of transportation is and let the host decide.
I would also expect the type of host and conversation to be quite different on other sites.

"Officially" you're supposed

"Officially" you're supposed to be travelling by bicycle when requesting hosting. Reality may be somewhat different. We asked for hosting in Iceland while our bikes were in storage at the Keflavik airport -and clearly stated that we'd be renting a car during our stopover on our flight to Zurich, where we were starting our bike trip. We were graciously hosted and the hosts provided us with a safe place to park our car for the night.

Everyone is going to react in their own way and that needs to be respected and accepted. We would probably have no problems hosting a "non-cycling cyclist" based on whether we like (or not like) what they have in their profile. We would very quickly refuse to host someone whose profile makes it clear that they're not really cyclists, but an avid cycle tourist on a different kind of trip this time around would be something we'd take into consideration.

In the end it's all about clear communications and respecting the responses you get.

cyclist or not cyclist

Actually, you are supposed to

Actually, you are supposed to be "human powered". While Warmshowers.org is primarily "reciprocal hospitality for touring bicyclists and those who support them", we also allow those on unicycles, tricycles, and backpackers. As said earlier, it is up to each host as to their comfort level as who they will take in.

I will not take in guests without a profile picture. I will also no longer take in guests who appear to have no desire to ever give back to this community.

Human powered VS non-himan powered...

Ken, I hear what you are saying. I would rather host a non-biking WS member, who has hosted at least several times and is just looking for a way to cut hotel costs, before I would host to a very new member (on a bike) who has no feedback.

Profile says; Hi, I am Adrian

Profile says; Hi, I am Adrian. I am not a cyclist but long distance Longboarder. I do touring on my longboard, just like any cycling tourer. I skated unsupported across many countries, Iceland, Cuba, Middle East, Korea, South East Asia.
Oh Qingli Adrian, a Member for 11 months 2 weeks, however No members have given feedback for this member yet.

Impressive list of skateboarding accomplishments , but you have no WS feedback and haven't linked a blog showing us a record of your travels. As a WS host, I need to know something about the person I'm hosting before I would let them stay in my house. Work on details in your profile and you would have better luck getting hosted.

Hi Adrian,

Hi Adrian,

As someone travelling by human powered means you are more than welcome to look for hosting through the Warmshowers community.

I wouldn't let the fact that you have no references worry you that much, everyone has to start from that position and there are plenty of hosts on Warmshowers who understand this. I would certainly prefer to host a newcomer (and hopefully send them off as another passionate advocate for WS) than a more experienced member thumbing their nose at the community when they should know better. As for the blog, I'm pretty sure there are still members here who aren't particularly interested in investing their time archiving their lives for online consumption, again I can't see how that is an issue at all.

Perhaps your profile could do with a bit more work - I know a lot of people hate trying to describe themselves without falling into cliche - but still it's probably better than at least half of the profiles of new sign ups. With a thoughtful message to your potential host showing that you have read their profile I can't see why you wouldn't get offers from active members, I'd certainly host you.

Suerte.
