Hi - we're arriving in New York 20th April to start a trans-Am trail but were disappointed to discover that a couple of possible campsites don't open until May. Does anyone know of any alternatives that might be open early enough for us?
Thanks!

It is hard to find campgrounds in the Northeast that are opened early in the season.
Do you have more specifics on your route? Where you will be heading?
Be glad to try and help you find good spots.
All the best,
Donna
Hi Donna - thanks for your reply. We're heading south towards Richmond VA on the Atlantic coast route and then a classic American Adventure cucling TransAm route across to Pueblo, veer north and eventually end up coming down the Sierra Cascades to san Francisco. Hopefully it will just be the first week or two where campsites are closed and we're hoping that Warmshowers and cheap hostels/ motels will fill the gaps! If you have any recommendations that would be lovely.
Thanks again

The campgrounds in the west are certainly more biker friendly than the east. We are west of the city so off the Atlantic Coast Trail. I would think that you can find warmshowers hosts that will welcome you. If you end up a bit further west on the C&O trail there are campsites all along the trail.... but it might be off your route. I have had some success with churches letting us camp on their property, but you would probably want to set it up ahead of time since they aren't always open. Along the coast there are many small motels that should be reasonably priced if there aren't warmshowers hosts available. Sounds like a wonderful trip. You might check the East Coast Trailways site to see if they have accommodations outlined at all.
Let me know if you need any more info.
Enjoy the ride.

There are some great tips there, Donna - thankyou very much indeed. I hadn't thought of churches at all.
Best wishes
