hi bicyclers,
i am planning to bike UP the pacific coast from San Fran to Williams, OR. I've gathered that it is preferable to bike DOWN the pacific coast, but I want to know if my route is feasible? I've heard rumors of wind & want to have an idea of what I'm getting myself into.
Any thoughts and experiences would be greatly appreciated. I need to be in Williams by June 18, and was thinking I'd start biking on the 1st. I want to have enough time to enjoy myself & spread out the miles as much as I need...
Most people, including me, prefer to go North to South, because the prevailing winds are out of the northwest. And the winds in June will be blowing very hard every afternoon. So you might want to rethink your plans, unless you don't mind serious headwinds.

We are also planning a tour there, from north to south. We've cycled a short section in Oregon in the past. We've been told, and it was our experience, that, at least in Oregon, improvements to the road, and especially the shoulder, have focused on the southbound side since most cyclists go north to south, so you might consider that too.
thank you both for sharing your thoughts & advice. i think i am going to stick with the south to north route. i can see how it's less than ideal, but i'm ok with that. my intention is to ride my bike as a way of transportation, and that's the direction i need to go! so hopefully if i give myself enough time, it'll be ok!
Hit me up if you need a place to stay in Santa Cruz. Seems like we have some similar interests. Safe travels!
