Hello! I am new to the community so apologies for sounding ignorant or if this info is elsewhere.
I plan on cycling the Silk Road from Xi'an, China to Istanbul, Turkey for 6 months from April 2015 to September 2015. To be honest, I'm not sure where to start in my research. Does anyone have any good links they could point me to regarding 1) an appropriate cycle route 2) visa info for US passport holders 3) appropriate gear recommendations 4) example budgets and/or 5) miscellaneous tips?
Of course, I am doing my own internet searches but haven't found straightforward sites especially in terms of appropriate routes.

Unfortunately it`s a pretty expensive ride through Iran for US passport holders. Do you`ve a second one?
Take that gear what you want. It`s working for the 5 - 6 months.
Same with the bike. You don`t need the high end brands like Surly, Thorn for these trip.
Budget? Hard to say. Expect for me for the complete next year about 5000 €.
