Christchurch NZ

Hi there

Am exploring the option of doing a 3 weeks ish cycle tour from Christchurch from 26th December 2019 onwards.

So far it would be solo and I want to keep things really simple as I am a little apprehensive but equally excited if I manage to get going.

Is there anyone Christchurch based that may be able to assist with loan of small touring bike or purchase of cheap one which I would then pass on to another cycle tourist when I leave?

I know there is a bike rental place near the airport...does anyone have any knowledge or recommendations in this area?

Ideally it would be nice to just fly out there with panniers and camp gear etc.

Am just aiming to head south and see how far I can get round the Southern coast line and basically follow my nose. Any companions would be very welcome. Am mid 50's petite female....

Cheers all, Carrie

Hi Carry,

Hi Carry,

Have you contacted Natural High and asked about a buyback? Generally they fix you a bike you can use for your trip, and they buy it back after your trip for half the price. We have done this in Auckland (we are still travelling with the bikes) and we are very happy to do it this way. Best to stay around a bit to test the bike for three to four days before you leave the city :). Also some knowhow about bikes is needed, as you are probably buying a second hand bike in this systeem of buyback, so some things might not work as expected.

We are also Touring in that region during that period, so if you need help, we can always help :)

Hi Carrie, Natural High is the rental and tour bike company that is near the Chch airport - a couple of km from it. ( Same company is at Ackland airport.)  There are aways a lot of bikes available for sale on www.trademe.co.nz  . Also, local Facebook pages have lots, constantly. Look for the Christchurch "Marketplace" FB page.   You have written that you intend just following the coast around from Christchrch. I don't recommend that. INstead, do a search for the NZ Cycle Network.  f you cycle inland from Chch ( better scenery, safer than HW1) then head south , inland, you will be able to connect with the ALps to Ocean route (without needingg to take the helicopter that is pushedd on all the commercial sites)  the Otago Rail Trail, the Clutha River trail, part of the Arond the Mountains trail, go up the West coast and do the Westland Wilderness Trail, before heading back to Chch by bus, train ( expensive option) or bike through the Arthurs Pass.  THere are several variatioins on the above. Feel free to ask me if you want details after checking out the websites.  Smiils, BIff
