Hello all,
My 10 yr old and i are about to embark on a ride from Toronto to NYC following the ECT. I'm hearing about torrential rain and flooding in upstate NY. Should we be concerned with towpath conditions?
Also, our plans have fallen apart 3 times for a place to stay in Medina NY. Anyone know of alternate arrangements in that area?
Best,
Chris & James.

My wife and I rode that path two months ago, so I don't know about things like potential washouts, but we did have a day of riding in the rain, and the crushed rock absolutely coated our bikes, really gritty on the chains!
a friend just finished the Erie Canal path. He said it was a grind but did it. He didn’t mention any washed out areas. Mark dutko - check out his Facebook posts - or message him (thru fb).
Well, you might talk some farmer into letting you borrow a hay loft. But if nothing else, you could do it the hard way (spend money):
https://www.alltherooms.com/ shows 58 places on the date I tried.
I've had three cyclists stay with me over the last two weeks all heading along the canal path from Buffalo, without anyone noting anything exceptional about its conditions.
The hydrological control of the canal is quite good, so I wouldn't worry about erosion of the path. After a big storm, I'd be more concerned about branches down.
