Planning a group trip from Port Angeles to Port Townsend in Washington. Most of this will be done on the Olympic Discovery Trail, but there is a section between Discovery Bay and Port Townsend that is on the highway. Has anyone ridden this section?
The ODT's site says it's quite dangerous since there's no shoulder. I was hoping to find some kind of a shuttle service since there are 8 of us, so too many for the bus. The alternative route is tool long (we're already riding from Port Angeles that day).
This is a group of experienced cyclists and we're not packing camping gear, just panniers with clothes so not overly heavy. However, I'm wont to cancel that leg of the trip if it means someone's going to get run off the road or hit by a speeding vehicle. Any advice for what to do is welcome!
We rode a few years ago on a week day. I felt safe enough and generally speaking the traffic was courteous. I am used to city traffic. We had a lovely ride. Without gear, those rolling hills will be easier.
Safe travels,
