Bike lending club in Greece in need for bike experts

Hello,
I am the administrator of the first bike lending club in Greece, located in Laconia region of the Peloponnese. We lend bikes since 2011 to guests from all ages and we organize cycling tours in the beautiful landscape of southern Laconia. Our bike lending club is situated in the sea resort of Plytra, just 25 km away from the byzantine castle of Monemvasia. We are in need of volunteers who can fix a bike and in return we offer accomodation and a vegan meal per day for visiting cyclists that are willing to volunteer in keeping our bike club up and running throughout the year. For more info pls contact us and we wil be happy to answer your questions.

Hello,

That sounds interesting! I assume you are in greatest need during the northern summer. I may be interested in helping, but I already have a busy year planned. My wife and I leave for SE Asia in 4 weeks and will not return until April. I would want so time to re-equilabrate again before heading off. At the end of the year I would want to be in the southern states of the US for my mother's 90's birthday. So, if you need some help from around May until the end of September we can talk! Let's start there and see what details are involved.

But curiously, how big of a fleet of cycles are involved and how many are "loaned" each day?

Cheers, Robert Bunbury, Western Australia

Hi Robert,

thanks for your eagerness to join us. Yes , we need volunteers during summer months and especially during August, where many city people come to enjoy our beaches and bike. So , we mainly lend about 10-15 bikes per day on high season and mainly kids bikes. Our moderate fleet counts 15 kid bikes and 10 adult bikes. We expect to raise this number through donations that are offered to us from friends.
So , ideally it would be great to have you here with us in August, but you may be more flexible if you like.

best,

Evangelos

Hi Evangelos,

I had a look at several things on the internet re the area and operation. It sounds attractive.
We have several questions to ask:

My wife my like to join for a while. She is a qualified yoga teacher. While she is pretty good
filling her day without me being around, we're wondering if she could do some teaching at
some of the resorts in the area or something. The interest is more in occupation than $.

Would the accommodation offer extend to two?

What are the requirements of the volunteers in terms of time? Would I/we have time off to
explore the region a bit? The odd day or two here and there. We may have friends
wanting to visit us while there.

Is the operation not-for-profit? Or is the lending free, but with some fees for guided tours
and such?

Are the volunteers just to be concerned with bicycle mechanics or are other aspects involved such as registrations, tour leading, etc...

That would help for now. Cheers, Robert and Thora

Hi Robert

Your wife could be occupied in yoga teaching workshops if she likes in an affiliate ecocamp nearby. She could stay during the workshops or as long as she likes. We certainly can acommodate two people. You even have the option to free camp in one of our beaches around the area, if you like to spend some days close to nature.
The volunteers are occupied for 2-3 hours daily 6 days per week, for tasks related to bike maintenance , bike lending and assistance in guided tours
Our whole operation is non profit. all our bikes are given for free as well as our biking tours.
I hope this answered your questions. If you like to join us I would be glad to know in order to plan ahead. Thank you.

Hi Evangelos,

Sorry for the delay. Alot is going on here at the moment. My wife and I are thinking that we could help during the months of August and September. Would that be useful to the operation?

cheers, Rob

coming to Laconia

Hi Evangelos,

I dont's know what emails ultimatly got through but I have been trying to send a messege that I/we intend to be there from mid-July to mid-September if that works for you. We are in Cambodia at present and will return to our home in Australia by mid March. So we can detail the arrangements when we return to a stronger computer network. Please resume communication through nealinaustralia@gmail.com

Greece at late summer

Hi Evangelos, We have returned from a remarkable trip to SE Asia and are happy to be back in Australia with the cooler autumn temperatures.

To my understanting, you are expecting me for late summer. I am happy to commit for the period between mid-July and mid-September. I can stretch that a few weeks either way if required, but I will need to have firm dates soon in order to proceed with flight arrangements and other commitments.

I am looking forward to it as it is not an area or even country in which I have travelled. I am attempting to research some family history related to my maternal grandfather's origins in Greece.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, Robert
