My wife and I are just about to start the PCH from Vancouver, BC and are wondering if anyone knows about the Big Sur area. We've looked on Google maps and are considering asking some of the locals there if we can cycle closer to the coast than the PCH and in between some adjacent properties to avoid the closed bridge, though we've seen that there may be other road closures along this stretch of the PCH.
Another option we've seen is to take a train from Salinas to San Louis Obispo.
Any other ideas out there?

PCH - Big Sur options?
My suggestion; follow the ACA or Caltrans detours inland. I first did the ride in 1983. Big Sur was closed that year due to a huge landslide. I cycled from the campground at Sunset Beach State Park to the campground in King City (City Park), and the next day, crossed back at the coast at Atascadero. Detours are a part of cycle touring. Make the best of them.
