references

I have hosted 5 guests and only one has left a reference. whereas with cou hsurfing I have hosted many more over 5 years . They all have left a reference. The couchsurf website gives promlts to the hosted guest to say thank you and leave a reference. It seems to me that cyclists are neglident or rude.

Unfortunately, Christine,

Unfortunately, Christine, there are also many (too many, in my opinion! ) negligent and rude couchsurfers, and not only because they don't write references ! I'm active on couchsurfing since june 2014, I've hosted so far nearly one hundred travellers but every day more I'm experiencing disrespectful behaviours such as: not answering my messages, cancelling at the last moment without giving any reason, choosing another host after having said that they were interested to stay at my place etc. etc.

"It seems to me that cyclists are neglident or rude."

Don't assume so. I've hosted a number of cyclists already, and only one of them has left a reference. I know the others enjoyed their stay and were grateful for the hospitality, because they sent me a thank-you e-mail further down the road and I still keep in regular touch with some of them.

Profile feedback was conceived as a way to communicate to the community whether a member is safe to interact with or not. It was not designed as a way for cyclists to show gratitude. And furthermore, it is completely optional. A lot of cyclists don't see the point in leaving feedback on someone's profile if that person already has some positive references. If feedback really means so much to you, then you might clearly ask your guests to give you some, but I wouldn't call a reluctance to do so being ungrateful.

Feedback

When the new web page surfaces in a few months, feedback is going to be part a bigger of the user experience than it is now (I think we are going to have a prompt similar to Couchsurfing and AirBnB)..

Couchsurfing's site redesign

Couchsurfing's site redesign (which was only pushed by the new management after the site became a for-profit corporation bent on monetizing its users) was savaged by longtime members of the community for emulating AirBnB and for replacing friendly, informal stays with corporatized, business-like "transactions". If WS goes down the same path, I'll probably reconsider whether I want to offer my hospitality here.
