We have just traveled through Brittany and the Atlantic coast of France. We contacted 4 hosts by email and did not get any replies. Even though these were at short notice we would have expected some responses..
One conclusion we have come to is that hosts are not redirecting requests to their inbox. And not checking warmshowers site for requests. This means we have missed the opportunity to stay with local people and learning more about touring in the region..
If we are right in this assumption could WS redirect requests to hosts nominated emails? And ask hosts to update their status. Mobile phones numbers would also be useful.

As far as I know, requests through the WS-site are redirected to the host's e-mail. Maybe you were unlucky and contacted inactive members?
And I don't think it would be good to display phone numbers on profiles. This is something your host should send you in a private message.
Agreed, we have a significant number of inactive members marked as ready to host. Did you check their last login date or response rate?
Yes we checked that people had been active in July.
And what were their response rates like?
Not one response to the 4 requests
I meant what were the individual response rates of each host you contacted?
