Credit card in USA?

Hi,

I'm from the UK and am doing the Trans Am route this August. Someone told me the other day that it's the norm for hotels / motels in the States to ask to see a credit card when booking in. Is this true? I don't have one at the moment, that's all, so will probably get one if this is the case.

Cheers,

Ede

That is a common practice over here. I -think- your passport will work for ID also.

Passport will work for ID but

Passport will work for ID but many of the "finer" hotels will want a credit card for incidentals AND if you wish to book ahead, you must have a credit card. Which route are you taking, e.g.m north, south, or central?

Get one

This is indeed pretty much the way it's done in the USA and Canada. I once balked at providing a credit card (in Canada) and was told that I'd have to leave a $200 cash deposit.

Will get one

Thanks for all of your replies. I think I will get one then and save any potential hassle (don't want to get asked for a $200 deposit!).

Cheers,

Ede
