Hi.
Does anyone know how necessary a free-standing tent is for cycle touring and camping along the Silk Road (China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey)?
Also, can anyone advise on configurations of electronics and internet access along this route? Paper maps or electronic? Is it better to take a simple phone and buy sims in each country or to rely on wifi in towns? Are solar panels to charge electronics advisable or overkill?
Thanks
Jean.
Hi,
myself don`t cycle with a selfstanding tent. Bought me a good windstable tunnel tent from Nordisk. Worked at the last 7 months at this route.
For navigation I use mostly paper maps. And downloaded the OSM maps of Maps me. Much easier in cities, areas with lots of roads. And of course it`s better to find sights, adresses, bus stations and so on.
Unfortunately the Smartphone need lot of electricity. So carry the paper maps
Thanks, Peter--good to know.
We on the other hand go exclusively for the free standing tent.
Great for sheltered spots or places with no rocks.
Setting inside a building without a place for pegs.
We also did the silk road.
Right now using a Marmot Limelight. great tent.
