The US Marine Corp has closed the Pacific Bike Trail between San Clemente and Oceanside near San Diego. They now require that you request permission seven days in advance of being allowed through. This is the only coastal route to and from Mexico. The only alternative is about 75 miles inland in the desert.
You can request permission on-line at:

Welcome to "the land of the free and home of the brave". The US military is afraid you are carrying bombs on your bike. :(

And what if the biker is a foreign citizen?
Is the construction on the 5 complete? I have taken the 5 on my last 2 trips as my riding companion does not wear a helmet and the military won't let him on the base without one.
I will ride by the 5 fwy......is a short distance.......and belive it or not,,,is a safe place, because there is a wide shoulder....in case if a police pull you over...they can give you a lift to the next exit(0ceanside)
or stop in the rest stop for cars by the 5 fwy ans ask for a lift to any truck....
not a big deal.
As far as I know. The is a train which allows bikes. It runs between San Clemente and Oceanside but not frequently.
yes could be illegal....but when you have to get trough that area,,,,and there is not road...then kinda turn be legal.
Because if the army close a open road, then they have to provide a other way to go trough.....now , in the area by the 15 fwy, close to North San diego, there is no access by other streets ,so cycling by the 15 is legal.....could be similar situation?
