This year starting Oct 28, my lady and I are preparing to embark on a cycling trip from Santiago southbound to Patagonia, and then north to Buenos Aires. Looking for some good info on the terrain, travel destinations.

Cycle touring Chile/ Argentina
We used this guide http://theglobelovers.com/worldbiketour/carretera-austral-cycling-guide/
and found it pretty useful. Mostly accurate we thought.
And highly recommend the Phone app - Maps.me - for offline map with all useful things marked like campsites and shops.
The crossing from Villa O'Higgins to El Chalten is "interesting" - you take a boat, and then a 4WD track and then just a hiking track ... before another boat gets you back to civilisation on the Argentine side. You can find guides online for that part.
El Chalten was a great place for hiking if the weather is nice.
thanks! Carretera Austral looks like a fun route. We'll take it!
Hi, we did from El Calafate to El Chaltén and then cross the border to Chile in Villa O´Higgings, between December and January 2015. There´s no need to get a 4WD, we did all the way by bike. It´s a wonderful travel. We recommend you to take your time along the southern part of Carretera Austral as it isn´t paved yet, and then it´s just you and the nature ( and many other cyclists, for sure). The Chilenean side it´s greener (quite rainy) and less windy than the Argentinian. You can camp anywhere, people are very friendly, we really enjoyed it.

How many days it took you to do carretera Austral?
It took us a month from Calafate in Argentina, cross the border in Lago del Desierto and start the carretera in Villa O'Higgins, we finished in Futaleufú crossing back to Argentina to Esquel. You can do it in less time, as we spent two or three days in a place or another, because of weather reasons or just because we loved the site.
