Hi all
I'm currently on a 10 week tour of Frnace, Italy and beyond! I'm in Montpellier now and want to cycle to Turin in Italy, travelling through Provence and then up through the mountains but am not sure of the best route. I am keen to do some climbing but I need it to be manageable with some weight on my bike- I don't want to go the most difficult way!
Any ideas?

You could follow the Rhone up to the Isere then onto Grenoble and climb the Col de Lauteret. I have descended from the col to Grenoble and the gradient is generally easy. Beyond the col into Italy is unknown to me. This gives you a lot of easy river travel although it is possible to find an easy route to the east of the Rhone to get away from the busier areas.

These two links journal our travels from the Grenoble area south and may give you some ideas of alternative routes.
Thank you! Amazing blog!

Have cycled Avignon-Carpentras-Sisteron-Embrun-Briancon-Suaze d'Oulx-Turin before and found it manageable, and it's a relatively straight route from where you're started. You won't get past the Alps without some climbs, but they are generally well graded routes with relatively low passes. That's my tu'pence worth!
Brendan.
Thanks Brendan. That's pretty much what I've ended up planning so it's good to know it worked out for someone else!
