el chalten (Argentina)-north of Argentina
Hola Cris,
I cycled much of the area a few years ago. Expect strong winds on the Argentine side and lots of sometimes cold rain in Chile along the Carretera. Generally speaking water along the carretera is easy to find.
the crossing of lago yelche is doable by boat, hiking a/o horse transport of gear (highly recommended!). You can camp near the border station on the ARG side and at/near the family that lives just north of the Chilean border post on the north side. Ferries on the Chilean side might be delayed by a day or two depending on volume of traffic, weather, owner's whim, etc. Be sure to have enough food to wait for the next ferry...gorgeous views.
there are a few routes (at least one) just north of Villa O'Higgins to cross back east into ARgentina.
See this blog: www.pikesonbikes.blogspot.com or google Pikes on Bikes for detailed info of some of the lesser traveled routes and inspiration.
Ride good.
