Northern Tier, Portland to New York April 2010

My partner and I are planning to fly from Australia to Portland 12 April 2010 and cycle to New York by 23 June along the Canadian/US border. We have bought the Adventure Cycling Association cycling maps and intend to follow the routes recommended. Any random thoughts, advice or information about any stage of the trip would be gratefully received. Thanks from Linda

A little early in the season

You may find yourselves trying the northern route ride a little early in the season - especially over the Rockies. The weather in Canada can be hit or miss until the middle of May. You might want to start your journey a little further south and make your way north (going diagonally across the US) rather than following the northern route in April and early May.

RE: Info on Northern Tier

Hi Linda,

If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking the archives of the touring list (see below) and/or submitting your query to the list.

An April departure might be early for the mountains and passes you'll be hitting very quickly from Portland.

Best of luck,

Ray

I totally concur that this is

I totally concur that this is TOO EARLY to be riding through such mountainous territory -- it is very much still "winter" up there. In Canada, the start of summer is considered to be July 1st and that's why the national parks campgrounds don't open until then! With all sincerity, I urge you to consider a different route!!

Northern Tier replies

Thanks to you all for your replies. It seems you are all offering consistent advice that April is too early to start this route. Rather than take a more southerly route, I think we'll wait until July/August to get going. Thanks for your suggestions! Linda
