Hi friends!
I've almost finished planning a ride from Munich to Tehran via the Eurovelo 6 route through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Northern Serbia. I want to leave the Danube in Belgrade and continue south via Niš to Sophia and Plovdiv towards Istanbul. Can anyone recommend the safest roads for cyclists on this route? Are the regional highways in Serbia (designated by an R and a number) safe to cycle on? We will be leaving Munich in late August... dates are not set yet, as my travel partner hasn't booked his flight from Australia to Europe yet. Any advice for the route would be very welcome!
Well, maybe not the Balkans but I can help you with the roads in Turkey. Just send me a message when you are near.
Ride safely.
Hi,
From Belgrade to Istanbul is a first class road - E75 and E80 (+A1 highway). They have a big traffic, especially for trucks...
So better option are to use second class roads that go parallel to E75 and E80. In Serbia that are roads N214 and 244, and in Bulgaria road N8. On this roads you may enjoy on nature, to see locals, visit landmarks... And find easy place to camp.
May be only one shortcoming are lot of homeless dogs in Serbia and Bulgaria, so buy a dog whistle or put in your baggage a log :)
If you need I send you a GPS track...
