Cycling in Denmark

Hello!

Me and my girlfriend are doing a cycling trip in Denmark and Northern Germany at the end of July / beginning of August.

What do you think is the best way to travel through Denmark towards Germany? We are starting from Copenhagen and our aim is to reach Hamburg and Berlin. Our current plan is to travel through Vordinborg and Rudkøbing to Flensburg – is this route OK?

At first I wanted to go through Nyborg, Odense etc. but I couldn't find any information about traveling over the Storbaelt bridge – I think we would have to take a train but I don't know if you can take a bike to these trains?

Any other thoughts about cycling in Denmark (and Germany) are most welcome!

Best, Tatu

Hi Tatu.

Cycling in denmark is super safe and easy. You have cucling paths almost along of every road so cars are not even close. Trains are quite expensive, even though is to cross the bridges is quite costly, but you can take your bike on every train in the country. You have to pay a fee depending the zones you cross, just like your ticket. You can google translate their web. I cant not attach the link but it is DBS and google cykler regional tog, it should show up. About which way is better i guess that it also depends of the mileage you want to do as through mainland you would do much more km to get to Hamburg. I hope it helps.

Hi Pablo,

Hi Pablo,

Thanks a lot for your help! Good to know that we can use the trains and that cycling will be easy in Denmark.

Yeah, it is true that the way through mainland is much more longer and because we don't have too much time I guess it is a good idea to go through Vordinborg etc.

All the best and thanks again, Tatu

Shelters are nice in Denmark.

Shelters are nice in Denmark. Normally are in natural areas so my advice would be to bring mosquito net, as you go in summer.

Shelters

Thanks for the tip!

Are the shelters like small cabins or lean-to:s or something else?

Hi. I live close to the Eurovelo 7 (Berlin-Copenhagen) route and have hosted many travellers following the route. Number 7 crosses at the Gedser-Rostock ferry (not so many departures), another option is Rødby-Puttgarten ferry (this goes every 30 minutes). Both are relatively cheap for bicyclists. I would not recommend crossing Storebælt Bridge, as mentioned you have to take a train. Alternatively if you go through Rudkøbing (taking Spodsbjerg-Taars ferry), there is the Bøjden-Fynshav ferry from island of Funen to island of Als. If you go towards Berlin, then Gedser-Rostock ferry is best route, if you go towards Hamburg, then either Rødby-Puttgarten or over island of Funen.

And yes, shelters are everywhere, install the shelter app and you're good! Another good advice is that churches normally have public toilets - often in a side building which is open even if the church itself is closed.

There are many signposted bicycle routes in Denmark. Apart from Eurovelo, the main ones are the national routes: https://trafikkort.vejdirektoratet.dk/index.html?usertype=3

But also many local routes. Sometimes you are led onto gravel paths!

All the best,

Troels

Thanks for the tips Troels! Good to know about the toilets in the churches. I am also thinking of changing our plans to go trough Rødby instead of the original plan instead of Funen.

Best, Tatu
