Budapest: tips on where to safely keep my bike for a few days

Hello guys,

I am soon reaching Budapest on my bicycle (also looking for a warm shower host actually.. Reaching on 6th or 7th of August!) and would need to find a place there where I can stock my bike for a few days in my absence.

To be precise:
I intend to reach Budapest on 6th or 7th evening with the bike.
Stay until 8 or 9, when I leave my bike in a safe place in Budapest
Come back on the 14th to collect my bike and go to the airport with it to catch an international flight.

Any recommendation is welcome :)
Cheers,
Melanie

I would go for hosts out of

I would go for hosts out of the center, living in house with garden, they may store your bike in their shed or garage or garden.
The tricky part is that what happens if your bike gets stolen from somebody's garden, you'd be angry I guess.
That's why I don't offer my garage for you. It's generally safe but I can't guarantee that no burglar will choose your bike to take.

where

Maybe is a place to keep the bicycle in train station or in another place.
Where can we ask about?

asking

Bonjour Melanie,
I asked some members of WS by messages.
Now I asked in Hungary some train stations and some travel agencies by email or facebook about boxes in or around train stations. You can do it, too.
When You find another solution, please tell us it as soon as possible.
Salut Sebastian

idea

an idea of "Neza Peterca" 3:35 pm

"Hi Michael

I could imagine, you could store a bike for few days in a bike shop and
next to that also ask them to box it for you before the flight.

Good luck with that!

I've read through the pages

I've read through the pages of the luggage storage places of each 3 major railway stations of Budapest. They are the usual automatic boxes. None of the pages say that these boxes are big enough to store a bike, though none of the pages mention their sizes at all.
I, personally, doubt that they are big enough for bike storage.
I'll try to check it myself on the site next week.

I too just looked at the MÁV

I too just looked at the MÁV (Hungarian state railway)/homepage. For Keleti station it says there are lockers. However, for Nyugati station it just says there is a luggage storage place. It does not specify that it is a room (like in the good old days) or just lockers like at Keleti...

If I had the time.e I would ride over and look... Maybe I could call them tomorrow...

Don't bother, just leave it in the street!

Leaving a bike anywhere 'safe' in Budapest is a waste of time. I had a bike stolen from inside the hotel I was staying at in the city centre. I was stolen by the local Cube dealer.

Box sizes in the Nyugati railway station

I was curious enough to cycle over to the Western railway station to measure the luggage storage box sizes. So, here is the thing:
The large boxes are 50x60x90 cm (wxhxd). Good for very small taken apart bikes I guess. 800 HUF/24h.
The extra large boxes are 50x95x90 cm, 1000 HUF/24h, but there are only 2 there and these are usually occupied.
But, I was talking with the owner about how to store a bike there, and he said they would put a bike into their internal storage place for the renting fee of the extra large box. And they are there from 9am to 6pm, while the automatic boxes are 24/7.
I would have doubts if I had to store my bike there.
But there may be more adventurous people than me. :)

.

Surely your Host in Budapest is the best one to ask ...?

Of course, if no-one replies to your Request. you can try " Biker Camp" ( see www ...) in the suburbs : it's pleasant there.

[ we had no reply from any Budapest Hosts to our Request in 2016]
