With a couple of friends i'm planning a bike trip through the western balkans in september. We'll start in dubrovnik (croatia), then bike through montenegro and albania to greece in 3 weeks. We all have trekking bikes and intend to sleep somewhere in the nature.
The problem is that it's very hard to get any information about cycling routes in the balkans. As far as I know there are no bike maps and I couldn't find any useful blog or website. So if you have any information/experience/advice to share I would be very very grateful!
Thank you very much in advance
well, I'm planning to go that way myself...
In Munich right now so it should be a couple of weeks til we hit Croatia.
Have you found any resources?
If not, i'll keep my eyes open and let you know what we discover.
We intend to wild camp where we can, i've heard land mones can be a problem in some places...
don't know about land mines, but you probably dont want to find any.
As I understand it wild camping outside of designated sites is illegal in Croatia, so you take your chances. But I have never had any trouble before. You don't have a bright coloured tent do you ?
hope your trip is going well.
Hey Phil, two friends and I are in Munich now, and will be heading to Passau this saturday to start our trip along the danube. We'll finish in Croatia in early june. Are you on the route now?
Hi, Yes we are on route... But we have chosen coast oover river which may not have been the smartest move...
Let me know how the Danube treats you. Maybe for the return journey...
We left Munich to Salzburg, crossed Austria by the hilly route (Taurenpass, katchberg pass) which was hard work and involved a little bit of pushing on the latter (17% with an overloaded bike is no fun!) However, not having to pedal for the next 20 miles makes it all worthwhile...
We are now in postonja, Slovenia, and will head tomorrow to Rieka. the weather has been awful, we got rained out yesterday - visibility was awful and we were on a road busy with racing trucks - and had to take a train. They don't run as often as you'd hope, but are cycle friendly for the most part.
Anyway, good luck on your trip, if you find any good tips, please let us know!
i just learnt from a Slovenian that camping on beaches on the Croatian coast is no problem as long as you don't pitch in front of a police station as he did one night...
hi, good luck with your trip.
take a look at eurovelo on google. they have 12 routes and one of them follows the coast of croatia. from what I understande there are many campsites in croatia, and not so expensive, and are mostly open till the end of september or sometime in october.
I am cycling from Sarajevo to Montenegro next week, with train included when the route becomes tricky. I haven't been able to find any decent information on routes, so any good information you have that you could pass on (in any area- sleeping, eating, things to see, routes etc) would be hugely appreciated
I hope you're enjoying your trip
